What Do I Need To Have A PV System?

You need a roof or ground space that is not shaded from the south, east or west. The best roof space is unshaded and angled at a 8/12 to 10/12 slope (30-40 degrees), and facing directly south. Don't worry if you don't have a roof exactly like this most don't. The only absolutely necessary qualification is having an area free of shade. When using the east or west side of a roof you only loose a small amount of efficiency with the panel. We have put panels on all roof types so please call if you have any questions.

How Many Panels Do I Need?

Good Question, that depends on several things. It depends on how much power you use, how much money you want to spend, and how much unshaded area you have on the roof. A typical home uses between 600 to 900 kilowatt-hours per month. In Colorado a 5kw system will provide you with much of that power which means 24 to 26, 3'x5' panels on the roof. Remember you don't need to cover all your electrical needs at once, you can start small and add on to the system later if needed. Even a small system will get you the same return on your investment. Solari Energy will be glad to talk with you about your needs and budget and make recommendations on what may work best for you.

Can I Put Panels On The Ground?

Yes, we have ground mounting systems and pole mounting systems which you can use to hold your panels. The only thing you need is the unshaded space necessary for the installation.

What If My Neighbors Have Trees That Grow To Shading My Roof?

If you install a system in an area that originally had no shade and the neighbors plant or have trees that grow tall enough to shade your panels, you have the right to make them remedy the problem.

How Long Does An Install Take?

This will depend on the type of install and the size of the system but generally it takes 2 to 3 days to install the system and 1 to 2 days for the electrical wiring.

How Much Will The System Cost?

This can be a hard question to answer in general. It will depend on several factors including panel selection, inverter, system size and mounting system, there are high and low end prices for each. Costs have also come down on some products which can help.
On average companies are Quoting between $6.00 and $9.50 per watt. At Solari Energy by keeping our overhead low  we are able to install at well below that average and sometimes less than $6.00 per watt. We also have self installation packages that can be less that $4.75 per watt. The best way to know the cost for your home is to have us come out, we will be happy to provide you with a free analysis of your home and provide you with a detailed quote.

What If My Roof Needs Replacing Before Or After Installation?

We will always inspect the roof prior to installation and advise you as to condition or needed repairs. It is always best if there is a question with the roof to replace it prior to the installation of the panels. If the roof does in fact need to be replaced after the panels are installed you will need to remove the panels. This should not increase the roofing price by more than a couple thousand dollars. If you find yourself needing to consider a new roof don't hesitate to call Solari Energy and we'll help you find the least expensive alternative.

Can My Roof Support The Panels?

Typically PV panels do not put much demand on the roof structure itself. Modern roofs are engineered with a large safety factor built into them and a PV system will almost never overload a newer roof structure.

What About PV Shingles?

PV shingles are basically wafers of PV cells packages as a shingle. They are installed flat on the roof just as a shingle would be and provide less of a visual impact than panels. PV shingles are less efficient than panels and much more expensive and require special roof preparation increasing the install price. As a general rule the installation costs would be twice that of PV panels.
