PV Panel Placement

PV Panel Placement

PV panels can be placed in many different areas. They are most typically installed on roofs but can pe placed on the ground or mounted on a pole.  Wherever they are placed they do best when they are facing due south an at an angle equivalent to the latitude of the site. The efficiency of the panel doesn't change much if the panels are oriented within  a few degrees of south and a few degrees of the optimal angle. As the angel and orientation move farther away from optimal  the efficiency of the panel will start to degrade somewhat. Don't be worried if your roof isn't perfect, few are. PV panels are severely affected by shade. Even a small amount of shade can cut the output of the panel drastically. At Solari Energy we have several tools that will help analyze a site and can give you an accurate report of the suitability of any given area for solar panels.

   Flush Mount
This first mounting type is for a roof which faces due south. This can be done on any slope of roof but performs best on steeply pitched roofs. The shallowly pitched roof pictured would not be considered ideal.

    Angle Mount
This type of mounting system is for homes with a shallow roof pitch and the owners do not mind having the panels stick up and away from the roof. This can result in greater efficiency but may limit the number of panels used. This can also be done from the ground.

   Fin Mount
This mounting system is used on home with shallow pitched roofs where the roof slopes east and west. It is the most obtrusive of the mounting styles but sometimes is the only option available. These systems will be fairly efficient but will need more roof area than other mounting styles. May limit the number of panels used.
